A common mistake tourists make is assuming that the tip is not included in restaurants. Almost without exception, your final bill will include a 15% tip added to it, known as "service compris" which literally translates to "service included". If you feel the service was exceptional, by all means feel free to leave an additional amount, but note that it's not mandatory as you would find in countries like the US.
Another common unnecessary expenditure most tourists incur is ordering bottled water. Regular tap water is perfectly safe in Paris, and if you're having ice in your drinks then you're sampling the tap water anyway. If a tourist asks for water or "eau", you'll be typically given bottled water. Instead, be like a local and ask for a "carafe d'eau", which is a carafe (bottle) of water.
